Yellowstone National Park is a geological wonderland with more than 10,000 hydrothermal features scattered throughout its 2.2 million acres of wilderness. The park is situated atop the Yellowstone Supervolcano Caldera, one of the world's largest volcanoes, and is home to four distinct types of hydrothermal features: geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles.

Geysers are probably the most well-known of these features. They erupt with bursts of steam and water, sending plumes high into the air. Yellowstone is home to more than 500 geysers, which is more than half of all the geysers in the world. They are powered by underground chambers of superheated water that periodically erupt when the pressure builds up to a critical point. Some geysers such as Old Faithful are predictable while others are not. Current geyser activity from the park website can be found here:

Yellowstone's geysers come in all shapes and sizes, with different eruption patterns and durations. Some of the most famous geysers in the park include Old Faithful, Beehive, and Steamboat. Old Faithful is the most predictable geyser in the park, erupting roughly every 90 minutes. On the other hand, Steamboat is the tallest geyser in the world, capable of erupting more than 300 feet high.

Hot springs are another type of hydrothermal feature found in Yellowstone. They are essentially pools of hot water that bubble up from below the earth's surface. The water in hot springs can reach temperatures of up to 199°F (93°C) and can be highly acidic or alkaline. These features are known for their vibrant colors, which are caused by thermophilic bacteria that thrive in the hot water.

Yellowstone is home to more than 10,000 hot springs, including the largest hot spring in the park - the Grand Prismatic Spring. This massive spring spans more than 370 feet in diameter and is renowned for its brilliant colors, which range from deep blues to vibrant oranges and yellows.

Mud pots are another type of hydrothermal feature in Yellowstone, and they are named for their bubbling, muddy consistency. They form when acidic water dissolves surrounding rock and mixes with sediment. The result is a thick, muddy pool that bubbles and belches with mud and gas.

Fumaroles are the last type of hydrothermal feature in the park. They are essentially steam vents that release gases like carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Fumaroles are often found near hot springs and geysers, and they are typically the hottest hydrothermal feature in the park.

The Upper Geyser Basin, located along the Firehole River, is home to some of the park's most impressive geysers, including Grand, Daisy, and Castle geysers. This area features a variety of hydrothermal features, including hot springs, geysers, and fumaroles. The geysers in this area are cone geysers, which erupt with a steady stream of water and steam. The most famous of these geysers is Old Faithful, which erupts every 90 minutes (+/-15 minutes)

The Middle Geyser Basin, located near the Madison River, features a variety of hydrothermal features, including colorful hot springs and small geysers. One of the most famous features in this area is the Grand Prismatic Springs, a vibrant blue hot spring with a rim of green, yellow and orange bacteria and algae around the edge. This area is also home to the Excelsior Geyser, which was once the largest geyser in the world, but is now a boiling hot spring that releases over 4,000 gallons of water per minute into the Firehole River.

The Lower Geyser Basin is the largest of Yellowstone's geyser basins and is home to the popular Fountain Paint Pots. These mud pots resemble a hot mess and bubble and boil as they release steam and gas. The most famous feature in this area is the Fountain Geyser, which erupts to heights of up to 75 feet, but is considered unpredictable.

The West Thumb Geyser Basin is located on the edge of Yellowstone Lake and features a unique collection of geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles. One of the most striking features in this area is the Black Pool, which is a deep blue-green color and is surrounded by a white crust of silica. This area is also home to the Fishing Cone, a geyser that was once used by early visitors to the park to cook fish. They would catch a fish in the lake and then drop it into the geyser, which would cook it in seconds.

The Mud Volcano Area is located in the Hayden Valley and features bubbling mud pots, steam vents, and fumaroles. The most famous feature in this area is the Dragon's Mouth Spring, which constantly emits steam and makes loud, growling noises. This area is also home to the Mud Volcano, which was once much more active than it is today. In fact, in the early days of the park, visitors used to cook eggs in the mud pots here.

The Norris Geyser Basin is one of the hottest and most dynamic areas of the park, with a wide variety of hydrothermal features including geysers, hot springs, fumaroles, and mud pots. The geysers here tend to be more unpredictable and irregular than those in the Upper Geyser Basin, but the area is still a must-see for visitors to the park. One notable feature of the Norris Geyser Basin is Steamboat Geyser, which is the world's tallest active geyser, capable of erupting to heights of over 300 feet.

Finally, the Mammoth Hot Springs area is known for its unique terraces made of travertine, a type of limestone that forms when hot water containing calcium carbonate rises to the surface and evaporates. Over time, the buildup of travertine creates colorful, terraced formations that are a favorite among photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

It's important to note that while these areas are some of the most popular in the park, Yellowstone is home to thousands of hydrothermal features spread out across its 2.2 million acres. Exploring lesser-known areas can be just as rewarding and may even offer the chance to discover something new.

Yellowstone National Park, located in the northwestern corner of Wyoming (and a little bit of Montana and Idaho), is a natural wonder that draws millions of visitors each year. With its scalding geysers erupting, pristine lakes, and abundant wildlife, the park offers so many opportunities for exploration and adventure. Here are some of our tips on how to make the most of your trip to Yellowstone:

           Which Entrance to Use:

Yellowstone has five entrances, but the most popular ones are the West Entrance, which is located in West Yellowstone, Montana, and the North Entrance, which is located in Gardiner, Montana. The West Entrance is closest to Old Faithful and the geyser basins, while the North Entrance is closer to Mammoth Hot Springs and the Lamar Valley. Depending on where you plan to spend most of your time in the park, you may want to use one of these entrances. If coming from the South (Grand Teton Area) you may consider entering through the South entrance. If coming from the east, you can use either the east entrance coming from Cody, WY or the northeast entrance near Cooke city (this option gives you the chance to drive the

Yellowstone has a variable climate, so it's important to pack for basically every weather condition. In the summer, temperatures can range from the 30s at night to the 80s during the day. Bring layers that you can easily take on and off, as well as rain gear, hiking shoes, and insect repellent. Don't forget sun shades, sunscreen and a hat, as well as a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. If you plan to do any backcountry camping, be sure to bring appropriate gear and food.

When planning a trip to Yellowstone, it's important to start early and anticipate traffic and construction delays. The park can get crowded during peak season, and popular areas can become congested with traffic. Starting early can help you beat the crowds and make the most of your time in the park. It's also important to be aware of any ongoing construction projects, which can cause delays and detours. Checking the park's website or social media channels for updates on road closures and construction projects can help you plan your route accordingly and avoid unnecessary delays.

           What to do in Yellowstone?

Yellowstone is a vast park around 2.2 million acres in size, so it's important to plan your outings ahead of time. Here are some suggestions for each day:

Option 1: Explore the Geyser Basins

Start your trip by visiting some famous geyser basins such as the Old Faithful Geyser Basin (upper geyser basin), where you can watch the iconic geyser erupt every 90 minutes. From there, visit other geysers and hot springs, such as the Grand Prismatic Spring and the Fountain Paint Pot. Be sure to stay on the boardwalks and designated trails to avoid falling in scalding water and damaging the fragile thermal features.

           Option 2: Take a Hike

Hiking in Yellowstone is an incredible experience, with miles of trails winding through stunning landscapes of geysers, hot springs, canyons, forests, and mountains. Hikers may encounter a wide variety of wildlife, such as bison, elk, bears, wolves, and coyotes, as well as a diverse array of bird species. The park is also home to many scenic waterfalls, lakes, and rivers that make for beautiful photo opportunities. Hikers should be prepared for varying terrain and weather conditions, and should always carry bear spray and know how to use it. Most visitors to Yellowstone National Park are now aware of the record flooding that happened in June of 2022. These floods exceeded record flows on many stream gauges, caused widespread destruction to roads and infrastructure inside and outside of the park, and forced the closure of the North Entrance to visitors and Lamar Valley to all traffic for most of the 2022 season.

I am happy to say that as of November 1st, the park service opened the North entrance and NE entrance road (through Lamar Valley) to visitors again!

All the other roads in the park are now closed for the winter season (normal closures) and will begin to reopen to the public in late April of 2023.

In a conference call with park officials, we learned that the West, East and South entrances are planned to open by Wednesday, June 22nd. This depends on if the park finds any other damage to roads in the south of the park.

March 1st, 2022 will mark the 150 anniversary of Yellowstone National Park. In 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the world's first national park for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. The foresight and action of all those who played a role in the establishment of Yellowstone were a gift to us all.

Have you ever been to Yellowstone? If so, you know what I'm talking about when I say it is one of the most ecologically and geologically diverse areas most people will ever experience! Home to a super volcano, 10,000+ hydrothermal features (hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, and mud pots), 300 species of birds, 67 mammal species, 16 fish species, 6 reptile species, 5 amphibian species, 1,160+ plant species (3 of which are endemic - they are ONLY found in Yellowstone!), 4 mountain ranges, over 70 named peaks over 8,000 feet in elevation, 1,000+ rivers and streams (2,500 miles of running water), 600 lakes and ponds, extremophile bacteria, amazing conservation stories and innumerable memories - Yellowstone is one special place.

Yellowstone has taught us many lessons as a society about conservation and the importance of healthy ecosystems. Yellowstone also set a key precedent of setting aside land for conservation; as the first national park Yellowstone paved the way for the other 422 National Parks in the U.S. and 4,000+ National Parks across the planet. I hope you are able to visit Yellowstone this summer to celebrate the 150th Anniversary and

Covid-19 has created its challenges, but we are embracing new changes so we can have an adventurous and exciting winter season while taking every measure to ensure the health of out clients and staff.

What measures will be taken to minimize exposure while interacting with clients?

Clients will be greeted with a healthy amount of hand sanitizer instead of a handshake. Guides will stand at a safe 6 foot distance from clients when possible and practice enhanced sanitation procedures.

What social distancing measures are we taking during tours?

Masks will be encouraged in situations where we can’t maintain social distancing. We will practice social distancing with other people on the trails/boardwalks as well. We will educate and enforce the importance of Covid-19 measures within the park as our clients continue their visit in Yellowstone.

How will CDC Hand Washing & Sanitation measures be followed?

Every client of Roam Yellowstone Guiding must sanitize before the tour begins, before and after lunch, and at the end of the tour. Tour guides will have hand sanitizer on their person at all times and will encourage clients to bring their own as well.

How often will we sanitize gear and equipment?

There is only one group, per guide, per day which keeps families/cohorts separate. Any borrowed gear will be sanitized at the beginning and end of every day with a sanitizing spray or alcohol wipes. Binoculars will be sanitized between each individual use and everyone will have their own gear to avoid sharing and cross-contamination.

             Will any gear be shared?

The only shared gear will be binoculars and bear spray. The guide will have their own pair of binoculars and a few other pairs will be dispersed throughout the group. They will be sanitized with an alcohol wipe between each client and at the end of the day. The bear spray will be held by a few chosen individuals in the group and sanitized at the beginning and end of every day. If a client needs assistance with their gear, the guide will demonstrate, explain verbally, or have a member of the cohort assist said client eliminating any foreign human contact.

If you choose to have food provided, how will we ensure minimal exposure and transmission?

Roam Yellowstone will follow all rules and instructions from Serve Safe food handler's training to ensure proper food handling. Every lunch is packaged individually and will be carried by the client independently.

How will we ensure that guides and clients are not ill?

Guides will not be able to receive tours if any symptoms arise and Roam Yellowstone Guiding will check in often with our guides to make sure everyone is feeling healthy and fit. We will ask clients a series of questions before the tour as well as the morning of (I.e. do you have any symptoms? Does anybody you’ve been with in the last two weeks have any symptoms of Covid-19?)

Roam Yellowstone Guiding will follow all Covid-19 regulations while in Yellowstone Park but also at home in our personal lives. Each client will be vetted before the booking request is accepted and we will check in with clients up until the tour begins. The business model of this particular guiding service eliminates brief interactions as well as extended interactions.

What's it really like to hike in Yellowstone?

Hiking in Yellowstone is unlike hiking anywhere else in the world.

In Yellowstone you can find solitude.

Yellowstone has a reputation for busy roads, animal jams, crowded boardwalks and uniformed/thoughtless tourists. When you go for a walk into the back country, this is rarely the case. You can be alone.

In Yellowstone you can experience the most intact ecosystem in the lower 48 states.

The management of the National Park Service (NPS) has created an amazing reserve of natural splendor. On the trails of Yellowstone you can tun a corner and be face to face with a Volkswagen sized bison, at which point you should retreat. You can see eagles and osprey dive for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout. You can watch bears and wolves scavenging and hunting as long as you want. You won't have to worry about stopping a mile long line of traffic behind you. In the backcountry, there aren't traffic jams. You can observe and photograph as long as you desire.

In Yellowstone you can hike through hydrothermal areas - even in the backcountry.

Many thermal areas in Yellowstone are roadside, have boardwalks, are incredibly beautiful and have a constant flow of tourists wandering through them. There are many more thermal areas in the backcountry that are just as beautiful and that you will likely have all to yourself (along with maybe a few bison). There won't be boardwalks or signs. It is up to you to stay safe and enjoy them in peace.

In Yellowstone you can hear the true sounds of the wild.

You can listen to the wind blowing, the bison grunting, the rivers cascading, the geysers thumping, the wolves and coyotes howling, the thunder in the distance, birds singing and trees creaking - all without the sound of other visitors, cars or dogs taking away from the natural symphony. The backcountry of Yellowstone offers the true sounds of nature.

The wildlife, the hydrothermal areas, the mountains, the rivers, the sounds and more make Yellowstone one of the most interesting and engaging areas you can hike in. You have to really try to not have a memorable experience.

Here is a quick and easy guide for navigation and orientation!

Navigation: Using a map and compass bearing to move to a desired location.

Orientation: Using a map and compass, altimeter or GPS to define your location.

The arts of navigation and orientation might not always seem necessary but at times they can be indispensable. It takes practice and time to learn how to reliably use the various instruments accurately as well as common pitfalls of using them. GPS batteries can die, ferrous objects effect compass reading heavily, taking a bearing with the wrong end of the compass can set you 180 degrees in the wrong direction and weather can change the altimeter reading by up to 500 feet. Make sure you take time to learn and understand all the tools you rely on in the field!

Now get off the computer and into the wild!

         Roam Yellowstone Guiding and COVID-19

If you've found this blog post, you may be looking forward to a spring time road trip as the US begins to ease restrictions in place to protect citizens from the COVID-19 pandemic.

If Yellowstone National Park is on your road trip radar, read through this article for the most current information from April 31st before planning your itinerary.

During a conference call between Yellowstone Park's superintendent Cam Sholly and Commercial Use Authorization (guiding permit) holders, we learned of the challenges the park will face while opening up and just exactly what the plan is. I would like to add that given the circumstances, Yellowstone's officers and officials have been exceptional.

The first thing to note is that as of Yesterday, there was no specific opening date planned for Yellowstone. However, we did hear that it is reasonable to expect The Park to open sometime in late May or June. The opening date is not secure because Yellowstone has to comply with the health guidelines of each of the 3 states it occupies. The opening of the park will be phased meaning that when The Park opens, most facilities will remain closed. We can expect trailheads and restrooms to open in phase 1 but lodging will not open til a later phase.

How will the park enforce social distancing and other regulations relating to the novel coronavirus? Guiding services like Roam Yellowstone guiding will be required to submit operating plans stating how each will mitigate the risk of spreading the virus. Risk mitigation will be left widely up to the individual companies. Coach buses and vehicle based tours will have difficulty following regulations. As an outdoor and trail based company, Roam Yellowstone Guiding strives to maintain privacy and distance from others as part of the natural experience -

for us, social distancing is the norm!

For the public, the park will again leave it up to individuals to follow regulations. This may seem crazy but it is not The Park's assignment to enforce social distancing. They cannot put their staff at excess risk nor do they have the staffing resources to control each popular area. Everyone has to do their part. We all know the regulations and how to comply. This may mean skipping popular areas, avoiding peak times of day, and simply not coming if you have been in physical contact with the virus, are feeling sick or have to quarantine due to out of state travel, etc.

The Park will not hesitate to close down if people are selfish and non-compliant.

How will Roam Yellowstone Guiding keep clients and staff safe?

We are lucky that our business model calls for social distancing even without the threat of a virus. However, rest assured every precaution is taken to protect our clients, ourselves, and others.

          What's the plan?

Clients will be required to indicate if they have been in physical contact with anyone who contracted COVID-19 or if they have signs or symptoms of sickness. If they have we unfortunately will not be able to provide service this season.

Depending on the date of the hike and future updates about COVID-19, we will suggest lesser used trailhead's to enable easier distancing.

We will maintain a 6 foot distance by staying away from others and stepping off trail if necessary.

As always, rental equipment will be sanitized before and after use.

As always, best practice food safety will be utilized to avoid food borne illness.

Our plan is continually adapting with the changing regulations. Please check back for updates!

In Yellowstone National Park, we can experience all 4 seasons of weather in a single afternoon and this crazy weather is amplified in the spring. Temperatures swing drastically from day to night and snow, rain and wind flurries can come out of nowhere on the nicest seeming days. It is important to check the weather the day before you go out and to pack for every season. You can check the weather
