Have you been to the Canyon Area in Yellowstone? In my experience, quite a few folks don't realize this area is part of the park! For me, it's one of my favorites. Pro top: visit this area early. The brink of the lower falls is one of the best short hikes anywhere.

While "#antelope" is a broad term for various ungulates in Africa and Asia, "pronghorn" specifically refers to a unique species found in North America. Here are a few facts about #pronghorn: 1. Speed Demons: North America's fastest land #mammals, reaching 55 mph! 2. Unique "Horns": Made of keratin, they shed and regrow annually. 3. Super Sight: Exceptional vision helps spot #predators from afar. 4. Long-Distance Travelers: Migrate up to 300 miles between seasons! 5. Herbivorous Diet: They feast on grasses, forbs, and shrubs. 6. Quick Learners: Calves can stand and walk within 30 minutes and run at impressive speeds within hours of birth! 7. Winter in and around Yellowstone is long. You might wonder what I do around here all winter when the guiding work slows and most of Yellowstone is inaccessible. The answer is enjoying the hills with friends and family! The animals that aren't hibernating are in their full winter fluff! Here we have a couple of coyotes and a couple of red foxes. Yellowstone is open again! Today, the park opened again after folks were evacuated and all entrances closed due to flooding on June 13th. The south loop is open and the north loop is hopefully opening in about 2 weeks, we may even have a chance to enter through Gardiner at some point this season! 🤞 Our thoughts go out to those who lost their homes and livelihoods to the flooding.

Home on the range, Yellowstone's northern range that is! Looks like the animals living on North America's Serengeti (Lamar Valley) will have some peace and quiet from all of us visitors to the park for a little while. The good news is that even with portions of Yellowstone closed, there are still Amazing recreational opportunities open for everyone (starting TOMORROW)! Do you think this is a black bear or a grizzly? This is a tricky one. Size and color are a poor indication of the type of bear. Grizzlies have a pronounced shoulder hump, a concave face and smaller ears. Black bears lack a shoulder hump, have a "straight" face/snout, larger ears and they can be multiple different colors. The ears and facial profile are what gives this cinnamon black bear away! Video taken with a zoom lens.

Black bear cub near Mammoth Hot Springs. This little guy was running around right next to the road waiting for his mom to return. We made sure to stay in our vehicles so we didn't disturb it. Here is my favorite action shot of one of Yellowstone's #mudpots. A sulfur/steam bubble rises through the mudpot, shooting some mud into the air. Sometimes the mud will jump 10+ feet. A high concentration of sulfur in these springs leads to an accumulation of sulfuric acid which turns the rocks and gravel into very fine clay that mixes with water, creating the mud pot. In the springtime when the water table is high, the mud pots are quite "soupy". The history of the American Bison aka #tatanka aka #Buffalo is tragic yet inspiring. An estimated population of 40 million bison that once #roamed across North America was decimated to nearly just 500 individuals. #Conservation initiatives have saved this species from extinction and there are now #wild herds throughout North America. In #Yellowstone, we typically see many #bison each time we visit and its easy to take their presence for granted. Any guesses about what brought all these birds to the same place?? Hint: There was a Tribal Hunt happening this same day in the area! This was the most #baldeagles I've seen at one time! On a tour with a family the other day, we took the secret safari road (aka Old Yellowstone Trail) after leaving the park on the way to our soak @yellowstonehotsprings. It sure didn't disappoint!

Old faithful isn't the tallest nor the most predictable geyser, but it is quite tall and very predictable! This photo is from the Sevenmile Hole Trail in the canyon area. It is a challenging hike but well worth the reward if you are up for it. The trail drops 1200' in elevation before ending at the Yellowstone River. Along the way you will pass by hot springs, fumaroles and even walk through a backcountry geyser basin. Anybody been for a walk through a geyser basin lately? The steam at #norrisgeyserbasin floats up through the lodge pole pines and can create beautiful scenery at certain times. The steam is also tinted red from wildfire smoke blocking out most of the sun's rays.

Sometimes the beaten path is well worth taking. A much needed break after the summer of guiding allowed me to back pack through the heart of the Beartooth Mountains north of Yellowstone. We hiked 26 miles and passed by 16 lakes and many mountain peaks without a bad view to speak of. This route may be popular but it is #spectacular.

Here is one strange looking hot spring. This formation is the travertine terraces of #mammothhotsprings. Hot water full of dissolved minerals flows to the surface. As the water cools, different minerals precipitate out of solution at different temperatures and create the beautiful terraces we see here!
