Bunsen Peak and Osprey Falls Trail

Volcano Summit Trek

Scenery

Don't worry, the volcano is extinct. Trek up and over this prominent volcano while enjoying some of the best 360 degree views in the park!

Mountain Summit

Hike all the way to the top of Bunsen Peak and relax. There's an option to add more miles and verticle feet by visiting Osprey Falls as well!

Description

Bunsen Peak, an extinct volcano, is a modern day reminder of Yellowstone's intense volcanic history.  The trail leading up and over this peak is ripe with ecological, geological, and historical significance.  The views this trail offers are the icing on top!  360 degree views will captivate everyone who takes this hike!

The hike gains 1300 vertical feet over 2 miles from the trail head to the summit and reaches an altitude of 8564'! There are many beautiful resting points where we will take breaks while your guide provides enriching information about science and history in this area of the park.

At the summit, everyone will have time to stretch, relax and unwind before we head down the other side. At the base of the peak we will stop above the Sheepeater Cliffs and enjoy another dramatic vista. Parties have the option to even hike to Osprey Falls (this adds 3 miles and an 800 vertical foot climb) if everyone is up for the added challenge!
